About 30 miles / 35 minutes north of Flagstaff. Ancient pueblos built by farming communities over 800 years ago, set against a striking volcanic landscape. Self-guided trails take you to multiple pueblo sites, with exhibits, scenic views, and a solid introduction to ancestral Puebloan culture. Admission is combined with Sunset Crater, so you can easily do both monuments in one day — one fee ($) covers the pair. Trails are open sunrise to sunset; the visitor center runs 9am to 4:30pm, so exhibits close earlier than the loop. Restrooms and parking are on site, and the monument is stroller- and wheelchair-accessible. This is an outdoor stop for preschoolers through tweens, with a 35-minute drive from town. A quiet, interesting stop that's often overlooked.
