High Country Motor Lodge

High Country Motor Lodge

About

Family Lodging • $$$

A 1962 Route 66 motor lodge reborn as a stylish basecamp, and more fun for kids than the design-hotel looks suggest: the outdoor pool is billed as Northern Arizona's largest (unheated, so it's a summer pool in practice), the game room stacks shuffleboard, a pool table, darts, and board games, and evenings drift between fire pits and lawn games. The General Store handles coffee, pastries, and grab-and-go from 6 am to 10 pm, Pack 'n Plays are free, and every room has a cassette player with mixtapes. Know the trade-offs: the Nordic Spa is a paid, adults-oriented extra, nothing sleeps more than four, it's a walk-up motel layout with no elevator, and the dog fee is a steep $125 per stay.

Scout’s tip

Paw-picked by the KFF team

The mixtape cassette players in every room are the surprise hit with kids — half the fun is explaining how they work. Save the pool for warm afternoons; it's unheated and this is 7,000 feet.
