A ponderosa climb to Observatory Mesa from the Railroad Springs neighborhood, just north of Route 66. Here's the fun part: the trail crosses the BNSF tracks via a pedestrian underpass, and that underpass comes right at the start, so train fans get the payoff before the real work begins. The full loop is a moderate, rocky hike of 3.8 to 7.5 miles with 400 to 784 feet of elevation gain; plan 1.5 to 3.5 hours depending how far up the mesa you go. Shade is only partial. This one is aimed at tweens — the underpass is a treat, but the climb to the mesa is the hike. Street parking near the trailhead. Open dawn to dusk in spring, summer, and fall, and it's free. A family-friendly urban-edge trail with a built-in highlight, as long as you treat the mileage range as a choose-your-own-length outing rather than a promise of a short walk.
