Ancient cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua people around 1100–1250 AD, now a national monument. The Island Trail descends 185 feet past 276 steps to get you up close to 25 dwelling rooms — it's a workout, but the payoff is worth it, and you climb every one of those stairs back out. The Rim Trail offers accessible canyon views if you want something easier: that's the stroller- and wheelchair-friendly option, with exhibits and scenic overlooks at the top. Ranger-led programs are available too. Admission is required ($). Open daily 9am to 5pm, with restrooms and parking. Best for elementary kids and tweens who can handle stairs; skip the Island Trail if you need a stroller. A genuinely fascinating piece of history.
Local tip
Every step down into the canyon comes due on the climb back out at 7,000 feet — go in the morning, carry water, and use the benches spaced along the trail without shame. Skip the stroller; a baby carrier works fine, and kids who make it get to duck inside the actual dwellings.
