2026 Guide to the 4th of July in Flagstaff with Kids

The Parade: Start Your Morning Downtown

Location: Historic Downtown Flagstaff Date/Time: Saturday, July 4, 9 am–11 am Cost: Free

The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Parade kicks things off at 9 am and wraps up by 11 am — which is a genuinely good window with little kids. The route runs from Elm & Beaver, south down Beaver, left on Aspen to San Francisco, and back north to Elm through Historic Downtown.

You'll see floats, local organizations, and plenty of patriotic fanfare. It moves at a comfortable pace and doesn't run long. Grab a spot on the sidewalk early and you're set.

Parent tip: Have an adult go early to put down chairs and blankets. Curb seating fills in fast.

Art in the Park: Pop Over at Any Time

Location: Wheeler Park, West Aspen Ave (Downtown Flagstaff) Dates/Hours: July 3–5 | Friday & Saturday: 9 am–6 pm, Sunday: 9 am–4 pm Cost: Free

Flagstaff Art in the Park runs the full holiday weekend at Wheeler Park, which is right in the heart of downtown. Around 80 artists from across the Southwest show up with fine art and handmade crafts, and the festival runs nonstop live music throughout all three days.

This one works well for families because it's outside, spread out, and easy to wander in and out of. There's food, a beer garden for the adults, and kids' activities on site. It doesn't require much planning — just show up and walk around.

Why it works for families: The park setting means kids have room to move. There's no ticket to buy, no time pressure, and plenty to look at.

A Flag Fourth: Free Symphony Concert for All Ages

Location: Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill Park Date/Time: Saturday, July 4 | Doors at 2 pm, Concert 3–5 pm Cost: Free | Free parking at Fort Tuthill

The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra plays a free patriotic concert every 4th of July, and it's become a genuine local tradition. The show runs from 3–5 pm, which is a manageable window with kids. Before the concert, there's an instrument petting zoo for children and food trucks on site.

Bring a picnic blanket or low-back lawn chair. Parking is free at Fort Tuthill, which isn't always the case for Pepsi Amphitheater events.

Why it works for families: The instrument petting zoo gives kids something to do before the show starts, and the music is accessible for all ages. The 3–5 pm window means you can be done and on your way before the evening crowds build.

Movies on the Square: Zootopia 2

Location: Heritage Square, Downtown Flagstaff Date/Time: Saturday, July 4 | Activities at 4 pm, movie at dusk Cost: Free

Heritage Square hosts an evening of live music and activities starting at 4 pm, followed by a screening of Zootopia 2 once it gets dark. It's low-key and free, and it's a good option if your kids won't make it to the 9 pm drone show.

Parent tip: If you're doing the Symphony at Fort Tuthill first (3–5 pm), you can head downtown after and catch this before deciding whether to stick around for the drone show.

The Drone Show: The Main Event at Foxglenn Park

Location: Foxglenn Park, 4200 E. Butler Ave Date/Time: Saturday, July 4 | Activities 4–9 pm, Drone Show at 9 pm Cost: Free

Flagstaff hasn't done traditional fireworks for several years — the wildfire risk is too high, and Stage 1 fire restrictions are currently in effect across the city. The drone show is the replacement, and it's worth seeing.

Free family activities run from 4 pm onward at Foxglenn Park: bounce houses, face painting, a balloon artist, yard games, and food trucks. Live music goes until 9 pm (DJ Quick Kay from 4–6 pm, The Coveralls from 6:30–8:30 pm), and the drones go up at 9 pm sharp.

Parking options:

  • Reserve a spot at Foxglenn for $5 (book before July 1 at prose.flagstaffaz.gov)
  • Free Park & Ride from the Flagstaff Mall or NAU Lot P62 — buses run every 20 minutes starting at 4 pm
  • Walk or bike via the FUTS trail system

What to bring: Low-profile lawn chairs or a blanket. Glass containers aren't allowed. Skip the big cooler and shade structure — there's not much room.

Parent tip: 9 pm is late for little ones. If your kids are young, the movies at Heritage Square or the afternoon activities at Foxglenn might be a better fit. For older kids, the drone show is worth staying up for.

Putting Together Your Day

A reasonable flow for families:

  • 9 am: Parade in downtown Flagstaff
  • Late morning: Walk through Art in the Park at Wheeler Park
  • Early afternoon: Lunch downtown, then head to Fort Tuthill for the Symphony (doors at 2 pm)
  • After 5 pm: Head back downtown for Movies on the Square, or drive out to Foxglenn to grab a good spot early
  • 9 pm: Drone show at Foxglenn Park

You don't need to do everything. Pick two or three events and build around those — the day is long and kids will tire before you do.

A Note on Fireworks

Personal fireworks are prohibited within the City of Flagstaff. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect, which also bans charcoal grills in city parks. If you're planning a BBQ, do it somewhere with a gas grill or check conditions before you go. For more, see Be Fire Aware.
